Playing Big Pots In Position

New Online PokerPoker Strategy

The hand we are looking at today takes place at NL25 6Plus Hold’em game on PokerStars.
We are dealt 10♦ 10♥ on the dealer button with $39.46 in our stack. Pick up the action with the hand in this video from 7:25

Normally in 6 Plus Hold’em Pocket pairs like tens do not play that well, as there are less low cards that can make flops favourable by having less or no overcards on them, in a six-plus game there are very little blanks in the deck so we are not going to really love any flop without a ten on it.

However this hand begins with 2 limps, one from a player that is playing very loosely throughout the session, with that in mind, a raise from us in position on the dealer button is a good option, we can get folds from both players and simply win the money in the pot right now, or we can play a bigger pot against a player that is playing too wider range and play the pot heads up against just one opponent.

With those thoughts in mind, we decide to make it $3 to go and we get called by both players that limped into the pot.

The Flop

Dream flop for us, we flop essentially the nuts with the board showing 10♠ A♠ 8♣ with technically the nut hands being pocket aces for three of a kind aces, this is almost impossible as both players limped and just called a raise, they would have to put in more action than this preflop with the best possible hand.

However, in a regular hold’em game we would not really have to worry about protecting from hands so much, as a majority of blanks can come off on the turn, in six-plus though, even when you flop a huge hand like this, you have to bet big to protect your hand from flushes and straights coming on the turn. Three of a kind’s shrink up to be seemingly worthless on certain run outs in this game, so play big pots fast is my advice.

We bet $6.25 into $9.50, in hindsight I would like to see a slightly larger bet, to charge hands like Qx Jx  and Jx 9x to the maximum in the long run. However, with the weak player to our left probably playing a lot of Ace high combos we don’t want to blow him off the pot just yet. We get action, our viral quickly calls the bet making the pot swell to $21.50

The worst turn in the deck?

7♠ rolls off, making the board now read 10♠ A♠ 8♣ 7♠. This is probably the most dangerous turn card we could have seen.
If our opponent had a spade flush draw he now has us almost drawing dead needing to hit the case ten to make four of kind to win. That’s not all though, Jx 9x and 9x 6x now have us in very bad shape too, with both of those combinations of cards making straights. 9x 6x is less likely as this would have just been a gutshot on the flop.

Action!

Our opponent now chooses to move all in on this card for $33.50, a slight overbet! This looks very ugly in some respects, as all these hands got there and now our opponent wants to put all the money in the middle, however hands like Ax 9x are now open-ended, hands like Ax Q♠, Ax J♠ for example now picked up a straight or straight and flush draw combo. Other hands such as Ax 7x, 8x 7x just made two pair with this card too.

We can also nearly completely discount a flush from our opponents range, as there is no need for them to protect against full houses, they would do much better to trap with a turned flush, going all in would lose them action nearly always and with a flush in 6 plus hold’em you want your opponent to catch up a little and give them rope to bet.

With those hands broken down, it is somewhat likely that our opponent has Jx 9x in this spot, however, this is the only likely holding that has us in trouble, we beat all the other two pairs, lower three of a kinds, pair and straight or pair and flush draws. So with that in mind, we make the call.

Our opponent tables A♥ 9♥ for top pair and an open-ended draw. They have 28.6% equity with this holding, with any 6 or Jack hitting on the river to give them the straight and the win. Time to HOLD.

The river is good for us with the 9♠ hitting. The final board is 10♠ A♠ 8♣ 7♠ 9♠ and we drag the pot and $82.42 with three of a kind vs our opponents two pair.
