A Look at Some Difficult Multi-way Spots

New Online PokerPoker Strategy

Here we are going to take a look at some of the harder to deal with tournament poker spots we might find ourselves in…

In this post, we will look at some examples of some tough tournament poker hands that even good players need to revise what the correct play is…

Mediocre Holding in a Multi-way Pot

$1/$2, $200 Deep

UTG: Folds
UTG +1: Limps $2
UTG +2: Calls $2

Folded to the Button…

BTN: Q♥ J

Hero: ?

This is a good spot to limp behind, we still have to see what action the small and big blind want to put in, so limping behind hear is a good play.

If we had a stronger hand, raising would be good, to build a pot against weak ranges, however with this middling holding limping behind and trying to realise our equity is a sound strategy.

At the same time, our hand is way too strong to just fold, in this case, a flat call is our best play.

Suited Ace High Against Limpers

There is a build-up to the action Pre-Flop to this pot… We have previously seen weak limps and bad play from the player in the Lo-Jack Position

$1/$2, $200 Deep

Action is folded to the Hi-Jack
HJ: Limps $2
CO:
Calls $2

BTN: A♥ 4♥

Hero: ?

We should look to raise here and get this pot heads up if we can, or at least get more money in the middle with our range advantage over what will be a weak limping range from our opponents in the long run,

We have a huge equity advantage to the point where limping behind would lose us money in this pot, so bump it up and let’s punish the limps!

Out of Position But with a Strong Holding

$1/$2, $200 Deep

Action is folded to the Hi-Jack
HJ: Limps $2
CO:
Raises to $10
BTN:
Folds
SB: Folds

Action is to Hero in the Big Blind…

Hero: A♣ 9♣

Hero: ?

Whilst we could just 3-Bet for value against our late position raising opponent, we will be missing value from our weak limping Hi-Jack opponent, so in our mind, smooth calling and inviting the weak range of our other opponent becomes an inviting prospect.

The other scenario is that we cold 4-bet from the blinds, but then we are out of position for the rest of the hand should we continue and we blow our weak opponent opening the pot with a limp out of the pot a lot of the time.
