What ranges should we be re-shoving with in tournaments?

New Online PokerPoker Strategy

This can be a tough part of any good Poker players game, knowing what ranges to move all in over the top of an open raise. Today we are going to look up some scenarios in which re-raising all in is profitable from some different positions around the table.

The idea of this is that we get a general idea of how wide we want to be moving all in, now these charts are based on the nash theory of how much equity we will have against a typical opening range of our opponents from different positions, but don’t be scared to tighten or loosen these ranges as you see fit depending on your opponents.

rejam ranges 1

The first position we are going to pay attention to is moving all in from the Big Blind (BB) against a Cut Off (CO) raise, this is a common play that you will see, a late position raise from a big stack looking to take down the blinds and antes with a fairly wide range… So our question is what hands can we easily move all in with some shorter stacks?

10BBS in the BB vs CO open

We can happily re-shove with any pair 22+
The same applies for any Ace high hand suited or off suit.
K5s+ K9o+ are going to show a profit in the long run.
Q8s+ QTo+ are good enough to put it in from this position.
J8s+ JTo+ and T9s+ are going to be profitable re-shoves too.

So our complete range will be: 22+ A2o+ K5s+ K9o+ Q8s+ QTo+ J8s+ JTo+ T9s+

13BBS in the BB vs CO open

This migrates our range, but only slightly when we have a couple more Big Blinds to work with…

Our complete range for putting in 13BBs will be: 22+ A2s+ A3o+ K8s+ KTo+ QTs+ QJo+ JTs+

rejam ranges 2

16BBS in the BB vs CO open

Our range with this stack from the BB will be:
22+ A2o+ K9s+ KJo+ Q9s+ QJo+ J9s+ T9s+ 98s+

19BBS in the BB vs CO open

Our range with this stack from the BB will be:
22+ A2s+ A4o+ K9s+ KJo+ Q9s+ J9s+ T9s+ 98s+

So that is how we can combat late position steals with a short stack, this isn’t to say that you can’t still defend against min raises and take flops profitably with these stacks we are just looking at what hands we can profitably re-shove for value against our opponents expected ranges in these spots.

Lets’ move on to a more tricky spot where we are on the Button facing a Mid Position raise…

rejam ranges 3

This can be a tough one, we are short stacked against a fairly late position raise, will our re-shove get through much? Do we even have fold equity? What hands should we be willing to risk our tournament life with… Let’s take a look.

10BBS on the BTN vs MP open

We are going to want to have a fairly airtight range as soon as the position of the raiser becomes earlier on the table… Let’s look at what our range will be with a small stack facing a raise:

33+ A3s+ A7o+KTs+ KJo+ QJs+

13BBS on the BTN vs MP open

Our range is much the same with 13bbs as you would imagine just a few hands are taken out, our range for re-jamming looks like this:

33+ A5s+ A9o+ KTs+ KQo+ QTs+

rejam ranges 4

What you will notice is that as our stack is a little larger and we actually have more fold equity our range increases…

16BBS on the BTN vs MP open

Our range from here looks like 22+ A2s+ A8o+ K9s+ KJo+ Q9s+ J9s+ T9s+ 98s+

19BBS on the BTN vs MP open

Our range from here looks like 33+ A5s+ A9o+ KTs+ KQo+ QTs+ JTs+ T9s+

So we have taken a look at what some late positon re-jams look like, so how do we react to early position opens or UTG opens with regards to hands for re-shoves. Let’s take a look…

rejam ranges 5

So for this example, we are in late Middle Position (MP3) facing a UTG open raise, let’s take a look at some stack depths and hands we are going to want to be moving all in with against this kind of action…

10BBS in MP3 vs a UTG open

So as you would imagine, UTG being the earliest of positions is going to include some of our opponents strongest hands when they choose to enter the pot from there. We need to combat this with also having a nice tight range, let’s look at what hands we will need to push with though…

Our range with 10bbs will be 66+ ATs+ AJ0+ KQs+

So we will even fold hands like ATo, A9s, KQo even with just 10bbs against an UTG open, this can be a big leak in peoples games, they think “Oh well I only have 10bbs I’m not folding ATo to a raise” however this is a bad train of thought as the expected holdings of our opponent will have hands like that in bad shape!

Learn these situations well enough and you will profit greatly by plugging leaks like this.

13BBS in MP3 vs a UTG open

Nothing changes with our 13bb range, this will be 66+ ATs+ AJ0+ KQs+

rejam ranges 6

16BBS in MP3 vs a UTG open

Our range will look like this: 77+ AJs+ AQo+ KJs+

19BBS in MP3 vs a UTG open

Our range will look like this: 77+ ATs+ AQo+ KTs+ QTs+ JTs+

It’s the same story with regards to our ranges here once we get some kinds of fold equity around the 20bb level we can actually profitably re-shove a slightly wider range!

Sum Up

Hopefully, this has served well as a little refresher for the correct push fold ranges you are going to want to have as a base for your short stack strategy, now this post is not to say that you can’t play other ways with these stacks, there is still plenty of movement with sub 20bb stacks in certain situations but this is an outline on profitably putting all your chips in the middle.
