Correct Nash Shove and Call in £100K High Roller

HighRoller Calls All-in with J3!

New Online PokerPoker Strategy

In this post, we wanted to look at a hand from the recently Triton High Roller £100K buy-in event that took place recently in London.

We have a perfect example of some great play here that might open some of your eyes to correct ranges for short-stacked spots in late position…

Action is 5 Handed on the Final Table of this Triton High Roller event

Greenwood is on the short stack with just under 7BBs and action is folded to him in the Small Blind(SB) where he looks down at T8o… not the monster you would hope to see when you have to push with a huge part of your range, but this is going to be a shove none the less.

Let’s brush up on which percentage of hands we will be moving all-in with antes in play with 7BBs from the Small Blind using SnapShove’s push fold charts…

77% shove preflop with 7bbs
So as we can see T8o is well within range and going to be a +EV shove here, we would even shove T4o!

Whilst it can be hard to pull the trigger in these spots, when you are the short stack on a final table, there are no bad ICM implications for your stack.

If for instance there was a stack with 5BBs, this would be a suicidal shove spot. We would probably only risk our stack with 7BBs with absolute premiums in cases like that. This is because surviving a shorter stack exiting will win us another pay jump… But being the shortest stack we have nothing like that to think of.

Let’s Take a Look at the Range needed to Call from the Big Blind

This is going to be pretty surprising for some of the players reading that may not be aware of how wide we are calling a 7BB blind vs blind all-in…

So would you believe it these Players in the £100K High Roller are playing perfectly! Making the call with J3o is actually completely correct. There’s a reason why Yong Wai Kin is sat at this table, playing mathematically perfectly is going to net him pots that other less clued up players would miss out on…

It’s worth noting hands T6o+ T3s+ 97o+ 95s+ 87o+ 85s+ 75s are all calls too.

How does this good call work out?

So we know it is technically a +EV call as we have studied the Nash Thoerum for this stack depth and we know Yong Wai Kin has the best hand pre-flop, but how does he fair by the river against Greenwood’s equity…

He manages to fad the 6 outs of Greenwood and scoops the 15BB pot with Jack three off suit!

Would you have made that same call?

If you think you need to brush up on your short stack decisions…

Take a read of this article which shows you how to correctly shove with 10BBs from all the positions on the table, that will you a good idea of where to start building your short stack ranges.

Another great resource is SnapShove.com a completely free website where you can check your push and calling ranges from anywhere from 1-25BBs at any table position.
