Tom Dwan Interview, New Highstakes Poker and Early Days

New Online PokerPoker News

Brandon Adams has an up and coming podcast that’s picking up speed in the poker world, with a huge range of connections in the poker world he’s getting access to interviews we never thought we’d see!

He sits down with Tom Dwan, who was in London before flying back to Vegas after escaping the Macao High stakes action.

First-Ever Poker Tournaments?

Tom Dwan flew over to London when he was just 18 and sat down at the £3,000 EPT. Out of 242 entries, Tom bubbled the final table, finishing in a painful 12th for £7,000 with first place paying nearly £300,000.

That was in September 2005, Tom Dwan then hopped another flight and made his way to the PCA, where he didn’t cash in the event but made some friends. The reason for his hopping around during those early days was because in the USA you have to be 21 to gamble in most states, whereas other countries allowed players from only 18, enter the online kids!

Bluffing Brandon with Seven Deuce

Dwan explains that whilst in Hold’em you might often look to limit the number of players with a large raise when playing the 72 game, he’s more used to the short-deck bounty game, where because people don’t fold as much preflop and you win chips from each player with J6o (statistically the worst hand in short deck) you have to look to bluff people out in later streets.

He states that without even thinking about it much, he switched into that style of play because he’s been playing mainly short deck poker.

Another Poker Boom? The USA to be legalised?

Black Friday saw the poker world lose 40-45% of recreational players, whilst all the Poker Pros moved to be able to continue to play the great game. Tom is hopeful that the US will be fully open for business again with 4 states now offering real money gaming.

He thinks we could see a second boom in the poker world, but we would need to see sites like Triton Poker that do their best to keep recreational players safe. Due to the growing risk of players using real-time assistance during games, to effectively play solver perfect lines in cash games.

Tales of 80 cent Bitcoin

Brandon tells us a tale of Bryan Micon who once told Brandon to pick up Bitcoin when it was just $3 and previous to that in 2010 he came across a player by the handle of SethSethSeth who was investing all of his Poker money into Bitcoin when it was just 80 cents!

Apparently, this legend still has all of his bags and has never sold his coins, due to the pure belief that Bitcoin will go to the moon! The same player won the SCOOP event 2 back in 2010 when bitcoin was $1,000… if he bought bitcoin with that win then he would have a bag worth over $6,542,088 from that cash alone with today’s Bitcoin price.
