So he is back at it crushing the $2/$5 Zoom pools with his super balanced GTO lines, with players paying him off like slot machines when he has it and making folds when he doesn’t let’s take a look at some of his most interesting hands from a recent session.
Continuing on the Turn with just a draw
This is a pretty awkward spot here, let’s assume that our opponent always has a value hand like a minimum of top pair for instance, so that would mean that hitting a King or Queen is no good to us and we just have our straight outs (3 Jacks) and our flush outs (9 Spades) to hit, a total of 12 outs.
All of this being true, which is nearly always the case facing a second bet here then we have 27.28% equity here. But our opponent is betting pretty big, so what price are we getting?
We are getting around 0.316 on a call here, meaning we will need over 31% equity to make this call correctly.
But there are some other factors to take into account, we can win a bigger pot if we hit our hand and our opponent still moves all-in or calls our all-in, another scenario that could come up sometimes is that we could win if the River is a club and our opponent check folds, so with that extra EV in mind Steffen makes the call on this turn card and we get to see the River…
The River is a brick for Steffen’s hand bringing the 7♣, however, this is a pretty scary card for a hand that is value betting the Flop and Turn.
Steffen isn’t one to shy away from a good spot and with his opponent checking the River he explains that he isn’t going to have many other bluffs in this spot, only really his exact hand that will be a backdoor spade draw that missed.
This is a good point whilst making a bluff, try and think how many possible bluffs would reach this point and if it’s not too many then this is going to make a great spot to put a bluff out there.
The Villian ends up making the laydown and Steffen drags a nice pot with King high.
Balancing out 4-Bets
So the main part of being able to 4-Bet in games of Poker is that your 4-Bets will be constructed of strong hands and good bluff candidates, this way our opponent can’t put us on super strong holdings every time and we get away with some steals.
Steffen chooses this KJs to make a 4-Bet bluff here, it blocks some strong hands like JJ, KK & AK.
Steffen gets called and now what should he do with second pair?
Well he opts to bet small, around 25% of the pot, and this makes perfect sense, there isn’t really any need to bet large with the SPR the way it is in this pot.
Betting small will accomplish a couple of things in this pot, it will allow him to bet for value and keep tonnes of worse hands in the pot when betting hands like AA, JJ & AJs etc and when using this sizing for bluffs we risk the minimum amount possible for when we are bet folding.
Betting this board makes a lot of sense at the 4-Bettor, we are keeping control of the pot, we are protecting our hand and getting instant folds from hands like 77-TT so I like this line of stabbing small here.
Villian makes a quick fold and this nice move gets the job done.
5 Bet Aces?
The point of the last hand is that we need to be balanced when we make each type of move, so here we face a 4-Bet from the Small blind and we have the option to 5-Bet because we have the Aces!
Exciting stuff, but what other hands would we choose to 5-Bet in position with? Pretty much nothing other than a huge hand, nearly every other hand will look to continue post-flop, be it bluffs or other tops of the range hands like AKo & JJ etc.
So calling here masks our hand in with a tonne of other holdings and makes us way less easy to read.
Too many players just like to click it back in this spot, but that’s just too easy to read and we are going to kill our action like that.
So after smooth calling Steffen sees a low board which is pretty dynamic and not the dream board for a slow play, but still it’s unlikely our opponent has a hand that makes a set on this board as those holdings would nearly always just flat call the 3-Bet and look to set mine.
One holding that is used as a 4-Bet bluff from time to time is the 87s, so if the Villian has that it’s just time to say goodbye to $700, there isn’t any getting away from it now.
Steffen continues with the slowplay and opts to just get the money in on the Turn and I like this play, there is little point in ending the slow play just now when the stacks are going to line up nicely with regards to Stack to Pot Ratio(SPR) on the Turn for a nice easy all-in move.A King hits on the Turn which either kills the action or helps us get action if our opponent has a hand like KQs, but we lose their action if they have a hand like TT-QQ some of the time with this card rolling off.
Steffen chooses this time to move all-in, I like this, we need to deny some equity now on the Turn and charge one pair hands and any hands that might have a draw.
Villain folds and Steffen most likely extracted the max from a double-barrel bluff.
