As we have seen so many tournaments get postponed or cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic that is sweeping the world the Irish Open was one of the biggest to get stopped in its tracks.
Ireland responded quickly to the outbreak and closed schools almost immediately after members of the public were confirmed to have the deadly virus.
Luckily however PartyPoker has stepped in and offered to host this prestigious event online!
JP McCann one of the top dogs from the Irish Open camp had this to say
“Since our announcement last week regarding the postponement of Irish Open 2020, considerable efforts have been made to find an alternative date to run Irish Open 2020. However, as the uncertainty surrounding live poker events continues, we feel that the best decision to take at this point is to cancel the live festival for 2020.”
We think this is a great idea because let’s be honest no one really knows how long this is all going to take to blow over and even when it has, there are going to be a backlog of postponed tournaments to get played.
Big Part of History
This isn’t just any tournament either, this is the 40th Anniversary of the Irish Open so it’s a pretty special event. This tournament goes back to the early days of competitive gambling. Starting a few years after the first few world series of Poker Tournaments in Las Vegas this is just a small step behind the WSOP in prestige, so it’s great it can still happen.
Yet another classy move from the people at PartyPoker, they really are the shining knights of the Poker world and it’s becoming more and more apparent with every move like this that they make.
New Schedule
The team are working out a full schedule of games and deciding on some game formats because some of the scheduled games aren’t currently available on the online software that PartyPoker has.
One thing we do know though is that the series will run from April 6-12 and the €1 million guaranteed Main Event, will have multiple day entries possible and they will crown the eventual champion on Easter Sunday!
