How to play when out of position on low flops

New Online PokerPoker Strategy

If you’ve ever been up against your nemesis opponent and looked down at a low flop that in general is not going to be that good for your range of raising hands, this is where we are going to talk through some pointers on how to construct how we continue with our different hands in these pots that can feel awkward.

Which hands should we be C-Betting?

We should be checking with a large part of our range when a raggy flop comes down because we are going to have a range disadvantage in general. We are going to have too many high card combinations that don’t improve on low flops compared to a caller of a raise in position can have all kinds of connected lower hands and low pairs that hit these boards harder than us.

We should only C-bet hands we might look to get three streets of value and these are going to be few are far between on these low boards.

When do we float

We cannot simply check to give up with a large portion of our hands as this will mean we will be overfolding and become exploitable by checking, so we need to have a decent amount of floats in our range that we will call a bet from our opponent on the flop.

We will also need to construct a balanced check-raising range with some strong holdings like our best overpairs and some weak hands with backdoor draws so that we can get value from our best and worst holdings alike.

Delayed C-Bets

When the action is checked through on the flop with our opponent not choosing to pick up the lead we are going to want to fire aggressively on the turn, looking to bet with any draw and King and Queen high hands looking to fold out equity in our opponents hands from their Ace high holdings and blow them off some better hands that can’t call two large bets.

Example

cut off vs button ranges
We look at the equities on a flop of 8 4 3 rainbow when we have raised in the Cut off and been flatted called on the Button in this pot.

We can see that the Button’s expected range has an advantage over us as they have more pairs than just two high card combinations.

Which hands would we C-Bet here

A good starting range for us would be hands for value that are top pair or better, so hands like A8s and overpairs like 99-JJ

And then bluffs like our lower connectors such as T9s J9s QTs that can pick up good cards to bet on the turn and then some straight draws like 76s and 65s

Which hands should we look to check with

We can look to check with our hands that have showdown such as Ace high hands, we can also look to use these as check-raise semi bluffs with our lower combinations such as A5s and A2s

We can also check with the top of our range like QQ-AA and our sets like 88 44 and 33 allowing us to check-raise for value and have a protected checking range in this spot.

We can look to check call bets with our Ace high hands that have a backdoor flush draw.

We would probably look to give up with off suit combinations of some of our King high hands like KJo KQo most of the time, as we need to have some give-ups in our range too.
