In this post, we review a run we made in a recent 6max Hyper-Turbo MTT on Pokerstars.
We run through some key hands that we played during late game in the build-up to making the final table…
Don’t be scared to Call Off
Hyper-Turbos are all about getting a big stack and then gambling in a tonne of pots, there are a few reasons behind this that we will get into during the next few hands, but this one is a pretty clear call, there are a tonne of chips in the middle and we don’t always get big enough hands like this to be able to call with.
Yes, we could be behind hands like Ace high or Pairs in our opponent’s holdings, but with all the dead money of blinds and antes in the pot, this swings the odds back in our favour even if we are a small underdog some of the time.
As it happens we are miles ahead of our opponent’s exact holding of KJo and we scoop a pretty huge 30BB+ Pot for our troubles.
Now whilst this may seem to be a pretty standard call, we could make this with hands like A2s+ 33+ etc too. The structure moves so fast in these games that we just don’t have time to wait for premiums every time we play a pot.
Look to pick up pots with shoves
We will want to pick a good selection of our range that plays well when called like 67s+ 22+ J9o+ Q9o+ K4s+ A2s+ and just shove with these types of holdings when we are against stacks of around 10-15BBs.
Raising is fine in normal games against these stacks because we can mix in some raise folds along with the hands we will raise call with, however, in these Hypers the extra-large ante just makes it too inviting to take the pot down pre-flop.
In a normal game at this blind level the running ante would be 160, in the hyper-turbo format, the ante is 2.5x the size so 400 ante from every player, every hand.
This means that there is 4,400 chips in this pot with the average effective stack behind us being around 15,000 chips we can profitably shove here with a tonne of hands as we don’t even need much equity when we are called to have a profitable shove.
Calling off short stacks
We can look to pick up a tonne of chips in late positions like this one where we have JTo a hand that plays well against a 3BB push.
We call here getting 14,074 into a pot of 44,398 assuming the Big Blind doesn’t call and if they overcall we will be getting an even better price.
To make this call profitably we just need 31% equity and we will pretty much always have this with JTo here
Even against a hand like AKs here, we would be getting more than the right price and we would still have over 25% against monster hands that crush us like QJ or KJ. So making calls like this are all part of practising having a big stack correctly…
We end up in a near coin flip with 43.2% equity in this pot and sadly we don’t win the flip, however, we just flicked in 14,000 to try and win 45,000… this is a huge pot for calling off just 3BBs!
Keep up the Aggression on the Final Table Bubble
Too many players nit it up on the bubble of the final table, I used to do this, thinking I want to make the final, however going into the table with a short stack is bad news for us, we will want to chip up before we go to play with more players and will have a harder time getting steals through.
Here when we are 6/9 we keep aggressive and risk our 15BBs from the Cutoff position with A8o.
If we win this pot we will be in a great position to look to take the tournament down on the final table with around 200k chips, however, our opponent calls us with KTs and hits on the river to cripple our stack.
A few moments later we end up getting our stack in the middle the first hand of the final table with A9o and get unlucky to lose vs 98o from the chip leader in the Big Blind… So GG and on to the next one, what matters is we played it well and we will get them next time!
