How Much Should We Bet With Our Hands?

New Online PokerPoker Strategy

In this post we are going to take another look at the mystery that surrounds bet sizing, this is a huge part of our game and we will need to really have a good idea on correct bet sizings to do well in the long run in poker.

Today we are going to switch things up and dive straight into example hands and look at some sizings and then explain our reasoning…

Hand 1.

We are playing at $1/$2 with deep stacks

We are dealt A♠ 2♠ & raise on the button to $6
SB: folds
BB: (Villian) calls $6

The Flop is A♣ 7♠ 3♥

Villian: Checks
Hero: ?

Betting around 25% of the pot here so $3.25 is pretty optimal, this allows our opponents to call getting the wrong price for all their bad hands.

We used a similar example to this in our previous post where we looked at when we can check back for pot control and this is a very close spot where our opponent can have some draws and floats that we will get value from as well as calling with all their one pair hands, so the question is how much should we bet?

Well, if we bet here at all we want to bet very small allowing our opponent to make losing calls with poor hands. If we bet larger we will allow our opponent to play perfect poker and only continue with strong hands.

Hand 2.

We are playing at $1/$2 with deep stacks

We are dealt J♣ 9♣ & raise on the button to $6
SB: folds
BB: (Villian) calls $6

The Flop is 9♥ J♠ 5♥

Villian: Checks
Hero: ?

Our thinking here should be to go large and bet around 75%-90% Pot
The reasoning is yes whilst we have a monster and we want to keep our opponent in the hand, there are a tonne of hands that will give us action in this pot… There are straight draws, overcards and gutshot combos, a flush draw, a backdoor flush draw and other hands with strong one pairs that will all continue to call a bet on this board regardless of the sizing.

So on wet boards like this, we will want to bet less often but when we do bet we should size up to gain more value from all the possible hands that will continue.

Hand 3.

We are playing at $1/$2 with deep stacks

We are dealt K♥ J♥ in the Big Blind

BTN: (Villian) Raises to $6
SB: folds
Hero: 3-Bet to $20
BTN: Calls $20

The Flop is 9♥ Q♠ 5♦

Hero: ?

Betting 25% Here is optimal…
This is a spot where we will have the range advantage and we have some backdoor playability, (We have a backdoor flush draw, one overcard and a gutshot to the nuts) we want to keep our foot on the gas here and bet these boards often to put our opponent under pressure with a huge part of their range.
