A Deep Look at Bet Sizings

New Online PokerPoker Strategy

Bets sizings play a huge role in the game of Poker, it’s how we win the pot without showing our cards, it’s how we can make our opponents make mistakes and how we can extract value with our good holdings.

We are going to want to know which bet sizings to use for each hand type we have in different spots, so in this post, we are going to take a look at the art of sizing our bets appropriately.

Too many new players will just use standard sizings for nearly all their bets, like half pot no matter if they are bluffing, have a huge hand or have a mediocre hand, but there are much better ways of playing than this.

What Bet Sizes are There?

The Block bet: 5%-30%
The Moderate Bet: 30%-65 %
The Large Bet: 65%-100%
The Overbet: 100%+

Let’s take a look at how we might want to use these different types of bets…

Block Betting (5%-30%)

using block betsSo in this pot we are looking at a pot where we called a raise and a C-Bet on the flop, the Turn action went Check-Check and now we are left with a decision on the River as to whether we want to bet or check.

I like betting here, we have the best hand most of the time and we could get value from worse hands with a Jack in them and other worse pairs too, this is a nice spot to go for the block bet sizing here of around 25% of the pot, this allows us not to over-play our hand and lets us get calls from worse hands that would fold to a larger sizing.

Another good point of this bet sizing is that for the times we are beat saves us money because if we checked here we allow hands like KJ and AJ to go for a pretty easy value bet where the sizing could be much higher than 25%. In those instances, we are saving a nice chunk of our stack.

Using Moderate Bets (30%-65 %)

moderate betOnce again in this pot we have defended from the Big Blind and the flop has gone Check-Check this time, picking up action on the Turn with a bet, we should be looking to size up a little here from the previous size of a block bet.

The reason we want to go larger here is that we want to be putting hands that have decent equity in a bad spot, so hands like JT, QJ, KQ, AT, AJ, AQ, AK that all have decent equity here and that could easily want to continue against a small bet will be forced to make folds or losing calls.

I like a bet of around 55% with this particular holding because we can charge overcards and worse draws and print money from them as well as limiting our loses for the times our opponent has a hand like K8 or A8 and checked back the Flop for pot control but would bet more if checked to on this Turn card.

The Large Bet Size (65%-100%)

betting bigIn this pot we raised pre-flop, bet the flop with a large sizing, we are now checked to on the Turn and it has completed the flush draw from the Flop, so how do we play this?

I like betting large here, this allows us to get maximum value from a tonne of worse hands that will call another bet here and we have a clear hand that can bet 2 streets for value with top pair, top kicker here so why not go for that value here.

Another good thing about betting larger here is that it will allow us to fold pretty easily if we are raised, as no worse hand is ever really finding a raise here against a large sizing from us.

Using the Overbet(100%+)

attacking capped ranges

These are the go for gold spots that will be the difference between some of the most feared Pros around and the decent Regulars that exist.

Isildur was known for bringing huge over-bets to the forefront of the Poker world many years ago now and since then it’s come to the attention of many players as a great way to exploit capped ranges of our opponents and apply a tonne of pressure.

The reason this particular board is great for and overbet is that we have a great hand, 8 outs to make a straight if we are called, but not only this, our opponent check-called the flop and can’t have KK, QQ, 77, KQ or AK as all of these hands either re-raise Pre-Flop or on the Flop.

Therefore with our opponent’s range being capped to weak holdings in this spot, we need to pile the pressure on and get folds or if they do find a Hero call, then it’s time to get lucky and hit our 8 outer and win a huge pot!
